On Thursday, November 17, the Senate approved Winnie Odinga, the youngest daughter of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Winnie garnered a total of 35 votes, while Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shahbal received a total of 38 votes.
The son of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kennedy Musyoka, garnered 25 votes, while Fatuma Gedi received 31.
Jubilee party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni got only one vote.
The elections were presided over by Samuel Njoroge, Clerk of the National Assembly, and Jeremiah Nyegenye, Clerk of the Senate, who both issued gazette notices outlining the procedures to be followed.
Part of the notice said, “Pursuant to Rule 15 (1) of the East African Legislative Assembly Elections (Election of Members of the Assembly) Rules, 2017, we, the Presiding Officers appoint Thursday, 17th November, 2022, as the election day.”
The Kenya Kwanza Alliance was allocated five slots to fill while the Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya will have four slots.
