On Friday morning, October 14, assailants in Kisumu County shot and killed Mama Ida Odinga’s bodyguard.
The police have begun their investigations into the incident, and initial reports indicate that the officer was involved in an altercation with a guy who has not been identified prior to the ensuing gunfire.
Nyanza regional police boss Karanja Muiruri, and Mama Ida’s head of security, David Masaga, confirmed the bodyguard’s demise.
According to witnesses, he was shot near Odinga’s home in Riat, Kisumu West Sub-County.
However, there were conflicting claims claiming the bodyguard was seen attending a club party in Riat, which is located in the Kisumu West Sub-County.
Two people, a lady and a man, who were with the bodyguard when shots were fired were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The police have not yet provided an update on the duo’s condition.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said preliminary investigations indicated the bodyguard may have been shot following a dispute over the woman.
“Apparently, they were in a club and an alteration over the lady occurred. The manager fatally shot the officer, plus two others before fleeing,” the officer said.
The suspect, a licensed forearm holder, who is on the run is said to have fled with the slain officers firearm
The Kisumu police boss indicated that he would reveal the identity of the officer once the family has been informed.
The guard was found dead, and his body was sent to the mortuary at Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Detectives assigned to the case launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled the crime scene.
Ida and her team are yet to issue a statement over the matter.
