The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reports that 22,120,458 voters have registered to vote in the August election.

The Commission’s chairman Wafula Chebukati made the announcement following the completion of the Voters Register audit by KPMG.

An audit report by KPMG shows the IEBC enlisted 2.5 million new registered voters in the past five years.

While releasing the results on Monday,  Chebukati said the report shows the number of registered rose from 19,611,423 in 2017 to 22,120,458 in 2022.

Chebukati also said there has been a 13.08 percent increase in the number of polling stations between the two general elections.

“In 2017 we had 40,883 polling stations, for 2022 we have 46,232 polling stations,” Chebukati said.

The head of the electoral commission also stated that the number of eligible voters in the country has increased by 2.6 million in the last five years.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), there were 25,212,096 eligible voters in 2017, compared to 27,857,598 in 2022.

According to data from the National Registration Bureau (NRB), the number of national ID cards issued has increased significantly since 2017.

According to him, the NRB issued 25,323,059 ID cards in 2017 versus 29,566,678 ID cards in 2022.

This, he claims, represents a 16.76 percent increase.

“If you look at the enrollment rate, in 2017 registered voters by IEBC compared to eligible voters by KNBS represented 77.78 per cent and in 2022 it represents 79.41 per cent,” Chebukati said.

According to him, the difference between the number of voters registered by the IEBC in 2017 and the number of IDs issued by the NRB in 2017 is 77.44 percent.

The margin fell to 74.82 percent in 2022.

According to him, the number of registered voters in the diaspora and prisons has increased significantly.

According to Chebukati, the number of diaspora voters registered in 2017 was 4,223 compared to 10,444 in 2022.

In 2017, there were 5,182 registered convicts, compared to 7,483 in 2022.
