By the end of the year, all Kenyans above the age of 18 will be expected to begin contributing to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
To be enrolled in the Health Insurance system, all Kenyans a18 years and above will have to pay Sh500 per month or Sh6,000 per year.
The new law approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the start of the year will be put into effect by the end of the year, according to NHIF Board Chairman Lewis Nguyai.
Nguyai was speaking during the launch of the maternity and theatre wing at the Outspan Teaching and Referral Hospital.
All Kenyans will have access to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in all healthcare facilities across the nation according to the NHIF (Amendment) Act 2022.
Kenyans will have access to maternity, dialysis, cancer therapy, and surgery as well as outpatient and inpatient services.
“The legislation gives NHIF the mandate to ensure that everyone who is above 18 years takes an NHIF cover. Within the next two weeks, we will have put the regulations in place and before the end of this year, it will be mandatory for all Kenyans above 18 years to have an NHIF cover,” Mr Nguyai said.
“We were in the process of putting together the regulation but we were taken to court and stopped, until June 30 when we were given the go-ahead. We want all Kenyans to access quality healthcare without paying anything apart from the monthly remittance of Sh500,” he said.
14.3 million of the 32.9 million NHIF beneficiaries are principle members, while 18.6 million are dependents. This is equivalent to 69% of Kenya’s 47 million inhabitants. Only 6.3 million members, or 44.6 percent, are active members.
