President William Ruto on Monday, November 7, announced that Kenya has entered into an agreement with a multinational firm to fast-track the development of affordable green fertiliser.
The president revealed this information while in Egypt for the COP27 meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2022.
“Under the pact, Fortescue Future Industries and the Government of Kenya will work together to build a 300MW capacity generation green ammonia and green fertiliser facility by 2025,” State House wrote on Twitter.
Kenya will make additional progress toward a green energy transition, as stated by President Ruto, thanks to the agreement made in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
He explained that the change will help cut down on food imports, stabilize fertilizer prices, and increase crop yields.
Fortescue’s founder and executive chairman, Dr. Andrew Forrest, predicted that the cooperation will result in the addition of tens of thousands of employment in Kenya.
On September 13, 2022, the president announced to the nation that, thanks to government subsidies, the price of fertilizer had been brought down from Ksh. 6,500 to Ksh3,500 for a 50-kilogram bag.
Additionally, President Ruto assured the public that his administration has made 1,4 million bags of fertilizer accessible to help shore up food production in light of the anticipated short rains.
“I appeal to county governments in eastern, central and wester regions where we are expecting short rains to work with us in make sure that this fertilizer is available to all farmers in that region so that we can begin the journey to increase our food production initiative,” said President Ruto.
Around the past few months, farmers all over the country have received thousands of sacks of fertilizer thanks to Ruto’s government.
“The forecast for maize harvest this year is below 30 million bags against the normal production of 40 million bags. The main cause of the decline in production is the high cost of inputs,” said President Ruto.
The President has stated that the most pressing intervention is to make farm inputs like fertilizer and high-quality seeds more readily available at affordable costs.
