Machakos University’s main campus in Machakos county, has been closed indefinitely following students protests over a rise of Insecurity around the university premises.
Through a memo addressed to all students dated December 7th and signed by the Vice-chancellor Prof. Lucy Irungu the university indicated it would suspend activities in the institution until further notice.
“Due to the evolving insecurity situation around the University and the ongoing students demonstrations, a Spccial Meeting convenecd on 7th December, 2022 resolved that in the interest of the Security of Staff and Students’, the University be closed with immediate effect.” Reads part of the memo
“This is, therefore, to inform ALL STUDENTS to vacate the University premises with immediate effect. Furthcr communication will be made in due course.” The Memo further read.
On Decmber 5th a police officer was arrested and detained at Machakos Police station after he was found guilty of attacking a Machakos University student and robbing him of a mobile phone and other valuables.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the incident happened on Sunday, December 4, in Machakos.
The statement by the DCI indicated that the police officer was working with an accomplice who was also arrested.
Detailing the incident, the DCI revealed through the statement that the two accosted two Machakos University students as they headed to their rented quarters on a bicycle.
“The duo who were on a motorbike registration number KMTE 33W had flagged down the students in the wee hours of the morning,” the statement by the DCI read in part.
Machakos University students later engaged police in running battles as they went on strike protesting insecurity in the area following the incident.
