The records that were acquired from Ezekiel Gitangwa’s phone proved that the individuals responsible for his death were not just for his life but also after his money.
Peter Kiboro, an officer for the county’s criminal investigations division, told the press on Sunday, January 8 that his mobile money wallet had been emptied of funds shortly after his death.
Kiboro said that Gitangwa’s account had been overdrawn by his estranged lover Agneta Agwata, who forwarded it to the well-wishers who were unaware of the situation.
“We have ascertained some withdrawals were made using his mobile phone line. The suspect said he had an overdraft and wanted to withdraw the money using somebody else’s phone,” he stated.
A boda boda rider was arrested by police after he accepted a bribe of a percentage of the money from the alleged killers in exchange for helping them withdraw the money.
He claimed he was promised Ksh300 to withdraw Ksh3,900, and told the investigators about it. A woman was asked to withdraw money, and she gave the primary suspects an undisclosed amount.
She claims that Agwata and her partner, a member of the National Youth Service (NYS), became extremely drunk after spending the money.
Moreover, the police discovered a string of dealings between Gitangwa and Agwata in the days leading up to his death.
Kiboro revealed that they had sought orders to investigate the deceased’s financial records in order to find out if the murderers had also emptied his accounts.
The fresh evidence, he said, went more toward a failed business deal than the love triangle scenario revealed by the earlier investigations.
Police were told by eyewitnesses how Agwata dispelled suspicion among her neighbors after they heard the deceased man’s plea for rescue.
She allegedly explained to them that the noise was caused by some of the people she had invited to a New Year’s party that she had hosted.
The headteacher was found dead in body bags in the nurse’s house.
