Winnie Odinga is the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) choice for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
A list of six nominees was revealed by the party on Wednesday, November 9. Among them were Winnie, Raila Odinga’s daughter, and Suleiman Shahbal, a businessman from Mombasa.
“ODM Selection Committee, presided by deputy party leader, Wycliffe Oparanya, met yesterday, Tuesday, November 8, and nominated the following to EALA.
“Suleiman Shahbal (Mombasa), Mohammed Diriye (Wajir) Winnie Odinga (Nairobi), Timothy Bosire (Nyamira), Beatrice Askul (Turkana) and Justus Kizito (Kakamega),” ODM announced.
Businessman Suleiman decided not to run against incumbent Governor Abdulswamada Nassir for the position of Governor of Mombasa.
Shabal collaborated closely with Azimio la Umoja’s top brass to support Raila Odinga’s presidential candidacy in the months leading up to August 9’s poll.
Winnie Odinga, on the other hand, played a significant role in her father’s campaigns, even to the point of coming into conflict with some of his allies.
The news of her impending nomination triggered a heated discussion amongst some Kenyans. However, she made an open statement refuting the rumors.
“I have not applied for EALA, nor has any official comms come from the party. Just a disgruntled incoming CS bothered by the girl,” Winnie Odinga stated in October 2022.
The nominees will appear before the joint Committee on the Election of the East Africa Legislative Assembly for scrutiny and approval.
Parliamentary major political parties in Kenya will each put forth a candidate to fill one of Kenya’s nine seats in the Assembly, which will be held in Arusha.
A large number of politicians were competing for a small number of nominations to EALA, which made the process of selecting new members very divisive.
On the list were the kin of defeated politicians and those who headed political parties.
