After being caught red-handed on Monday, December 5, by Closed-circuit television (CCTV) while stealing from Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) invigilators, a police officer has fled the scene and is currently on the run.
As soon as the officer who stole from the teachers at Kimulot High School in the Konoin constituency of Bomet County found out that an investigation was being conducted, he fled the scene.
National Police Service Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango told media houses on Tuesday, December 6 that investigations are underway to determine the truth.
“Necessary processes are indeed underway to ensure that justice is served,” Resila confirmed.
The officer from the Administration Police had been sent to the school to man the ongoing KCSE that was being administered by the invigilators.
The cop in the viral video used stealth tactics, walking inside the nearly empty room without anybody noticing him.
When he saw the bags on the bench, he wasted no time going through them.
“The matter is before internal disciplinary mechanisms by the Administration Police Service since it appears that the officer is from the AP wing,” Resila revealed.
It has been stated that police headquarters stepped in after local police officials did little to address the situation.
“We have dispatched officers from the county headquarters to the ground to verify the information that is now in the public domain. We are trying to verify whether or not the incident occurred in the school so that appropriate action can be taken,” a senior police officer at the Bomet County headquarters revealed.
After discovering their wallets were stolen, three victims have come forward to record statements, according to Bomet County Police Commandant Mathews Mangira.
“One of the victims reported that she lost a hundred shillings, another lost nine hundred, while the other three hundred shillings, which prompted them to consult with the school administration to review the CCTV camera” added Mangira.
An investigation team has been formed to find the rogue cop and bring him to justice.
Not yet disclosed, however, is the exact sum of money the police officers stole from the teachers.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) prohibited any exam room personnel, including invigilators, from bringing any personal goods, including cell phones, into the examination rooms.
